    Vocal fry IS an affectation. The fact that journalists and actors interpreting upper class characters use vocal fry doesn't deny it, but proves it. If you strategically use uptalk or vocal fry to sound excited or a know-it-all, you are trying to manipulate people, and people don't like being manipulated so become angry at you. That's all, no sexism or other bullshit involved.

    Americans pronounce Ts as Ds, because they insist on pronouncing all Rs. The T to D conversion forces one to rely on context, to know if Americans are talking about "coding" or "coating". The British drop many Rs and can pronounce Ts with less stress. When British drop Ts, they sound "low class".

    Fry sounds like a violin when the bow is moved too slowly, and it produces a lot of "start stop" vibrations (from irregular frictional slip-stick). In other words, it sounds amateur, lazy or tired. Perhaps young females with small lungs run out of breath and can't put enough "steam" into the end of their sentences. It is as if these ladies are tired, and lying down. Or, they are speaking quietly, to prevent eaves-droppers from listening in.

    Watching this video I realized what I actually dislike is not the fry but something I have noticed is I don’t like where the fry starts. It’s a high pitched nasal sound that I highly dislike. I actually don’t mind the fry. But what I don’t like is the nasal sound associated with some who do fry. Personally I don’t like the nasal sound of the California accent in women AND men. But in the Finnish clip I found everyone sounding very normal and it didn’t bother me. The fry makes the nasal quality of the Californian accent pretty annoying, although I find it more annoying in men than women 😂

    Finns vocal fry when they know whatever crap coming out of their mouth doesn't need to be said in the first place, that's why every clip here was of people presenting some irrelevant garbage on tv, such as "news". It's a disappointing phenomenon, since as educated people, we ought to know not to blabber in the first place.

  • @Altoclarinets
    @Altoclarinets 2 дні тому

    "the language doesn't allow a vowel after a schwa" Yeah, we know, that's what the glottal is for! The other thing about R that Brits regularly get wrong when trying to do US accents is that we don't USE that R and we don't use that other one either! Most of our Rs are approximants in the back of the mouth - bunched velar or rarely retroflex - the dental/alveolar Rs of RP sound pretentious and over-the-top and the labiodental approximant Rs of MLE and other "younger" dialects sound like a toddler who hasn't actually learned how to speak properly yet. Like genuinely if a kid shows up to kindergarten talking like that they get sent to speech therapy until they learn to form the sound without turning it into a W. For obvious reasons the dental/alveolar Rs show up more often when British actors fail at American accents and it makes them sound weirdly clipped and formal. Takes you out of the immersion instantly.

    Another piece of evidence is borrowed words (пейджер), including names (Дэйв), including brand names (Я.Пэй). However, AFAIK it's only for /j/ (because there's no /w/ in Russian) and only in what are usually called diphthongs (probably because of the reduced pronunciation in English, although something like what's in флуд may also be a case)
